Pedaling in Western Liguria

Lead by our own Native of Liguria top guide, Andrea Marchesini

Discover the allure of other side of the Ligurian arched region on a bike tour through western Liguria. Travel west of Cinque Terre and Genova to explore the gorgeous Riviera delle Palme (Palms Riviera) and Riviera dei Fiori (Flowers Riviera) – major destinations for Italian and European tourists since the early 1950s. This unique region is a beautiful maze of fortified medieval villages and small fishing towns with strong connections to the north and Piedmont and deep traditions of sailing, fishing, and trading through the Mediterranean Sea. On this cycling tour you will encounter a fascinating coastline bustling with activity, unparalleled hilly roads and routes in the magical “entroterra” (inland), and interesting local history and art throughout. Delight in a wide variety of food from the area where the coast meets the Alps, sample lesser known but exquisite wines and superb olive oil, and visit Slow Food producers.

You’ll also learn how such a small region, rich in history despite being isolated due to its unique landscape, witnessed the lives of actors, musicians, poets and writers, architects, politicians, and key figures in the birth of Italy as a nation.

Day by Day

Finale Ligure Warm-up

Finale really combines the best of both worlds: the sea with a white sanded beaches and
the verdant mountains. The area had seen settlements as far back as Paleolitic era with
important findings that are visible in the Civic Museum.

Finale Ligure Loop

The area known as “Finalese” extends around Finale from sea level up to 3280 ft. A series of steep valleys are surrounded by important rocky formations that have made Finale Ligure a world-renown rock climbing destination. We’ll cycle the roads around the larger and smaller valleys that are abundant with Mediterranean vegetation. North of the “Finalese”, the Apennine Mountains separate Liguria from Piedmont. Enjoy lunch in Finalborgo before continuing for the last 20 km back to the hotel. Tonight, delight in dinner at Finale Ligure Marina.

Finale Ligure to Alassio

Today’s ride gains elevation via a steady climb up the Melogno pass - this landmark is a fortification dating back to the Napoleon era. The road winds through a woodland filled with beech trees. Once you leave the busier coast, the secondary roads are almost unlimited and you can climb up to 3280 mt of elevation. These peaks are actually the Ligurian Alps joining the Apennines and you’ll enjoy astonishing views from atop! In fact, every climb is rewarded with spectacular views. In Bardineto we will visit a local farmer and cheese maker. Our final destination of the day is the town of Alassio.

Alassio Loop

Alassio is a fashionable seaside town and we’ll be staying at Hotel Savoia, which is very centrally located and conveniently situated next to the carrugio pedestrian strip. A carrugio (narrow alley) is where Ligurian coastal villages become alive with commercial activities, filled with bars and restaurants, and where Italian families leisurely spend their time when they are not sun bathing. We ride a loop that is the classic ride of the local cyclists, featuring windy roads set among olive groves that have been cultivated into terraces in the mountain to compensate for the gradient area.

Alassio to Borgomaro

Today we heads away from the coast and switch locations by cycling into the valleys and ridges heading east. The ride takes us climbing up a few passes with gentle grades, but expect some sudden steeper portions to arise at times. The highest point will be by Passo del Ginestro (2221ft) where you will encounter stunning panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Corsica from the summit! This evening we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner at the local restaurant Censin Da Bea.

Borgomaro to San Remo

Feel like one of the pros taking part in the Milano-San Remo, one of the oldest and most prestigious races in Europe, on your ride today through Cipressa and Poggio. Your arrival in beautiful San Remo (the Italian capital of flower cultivation) will be a perfect ending to a fantastic week of riding in this beautiful part of Italy!

Goodbye or Extension in San Remo

After breakfast, we provide a shuttle to the San Remo train station. You can also book a taxi or a group transfer to you airport of choice (Genova or Nice) and your travel consultant or Andrea can assist you with that. If you are able to stay in the area a little longer, we have a great plan for you! We will stay at Hotel Villa Sylvia one extra night and Andrea will take you on one of his favorite rides around San Remo.
